The Employer agrees that nothing less than the current level of Service IV will be maintained 24 hours a day for the duration of this Agreement. GEO works according to the laws on the right to work, which allow GSIs and GSSAs to obtain the benefits and protection of the contract without contributing to their union representation. Nevertheless, the Union is committed to a fairer university for PhD students and the wider campus community. We are taking advantage of this new environment to double our organizational efforts and focus on building our collective strength for future battles. The employer recognizes the association as an exclusive and exclusive negotiator for the purposes of collective bargaining on wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment for all employees in the following bargaining unit: all domestic agents employed by the regents of the University of Michigan who possess the equivalent of a minimum title, D.O. or D.D.S., with the exception of pharmacy trainees, dietary trainees, physiotherapy and occupational therapy apprentices, nurse-anaesthetists` apprentices, pastoral trainees and all other collaborators. Also excluded from the bargaining unit are persons with house officer titles who have dry appointments and who are paid by an institution outside the university. It goes without saying that when a commission program contains a topic concerning the employer`s relationship (existing or potential) with a union, or the management of a collective agreement or wages or benefits for a worker, whether or not they are members of that bargaining unit, the workers present may be exempted from that part of the committee meeting by the chair of the committee. The purpose of this period will be to inform employees of the union`s function, report dues and deductions of service expenses, recruit department administrators, discuss the current status of negotiations and answer new questions from staff, in accordance with contractual provisions and the law. UM argues that irreparable injuries occur in the form of a disorder of the vital function of the university; undermine the growth of education and students` plans, including the inability to continue teaching without certainty that it will be possible to deal effectively with lost time if the strike continues; the increase in operating costs and the loss of confidence and prestige in the quality of public education at UM. The contract expired on 1 February 1999 and the union agreed to renew the contract in February. Another mass assembly of more than 300 members approved a “Job Action Authorization” vote, a member-wide vote within the next 10 days, with the union getting a vote for 75%.
